Social Justice
The Pilgrim Social Justice Committee was formed in the mid 1970s to raise issues of concern
and develop responses to them. It informs the congregation and acts where appropriate.
One of the ways of informing the congregation is through the Social Justice News.
Editions of this Newsletter are produced on an irregular basis.
The Disaster Fund has been in place for more than twenty eight years. Funded through
individual donations it has contributed significantly throughout that time providing
assistance to the victims of earthquakes, cyclones, fire famine, volcanoes and floods.
Many requests for financial assistance from other organisations come before the committee.
At one time it staunchly supported the Indo Chinese Refugee Association at the time of
Vietnamese boat people. A number of Aboriginal groups have been supported over time,
as have church missions. For some years sweets have been provided to every child in
families receiving Christmas hampers through the largest ham per program at Uniting
Care Wesley Bowden.
Specific contributions have been made to the Uniting Church Baxter Chaplaincy and to
schools providing education to children in community detention. There is cross membership
with the Pilgrim Circle of Friends, and the circle is supported by the committee.
The committee has been well served by people whose commitment to social justice has
made a significant contribution to social justice in South Australia. A fund is to be
established in Judith Blake's memory to assist young women to attend national and
international conferences and leadership opportunities.

Panel left: In Joppa there was a woman named Tabitha, who was believer
(Her name in Greek is Dorcas, meaning "a deer") She spent all her time doing good and helping the poor.
