Uniting World – Opportunities for global engagement
- Community Announcement -"Experience Volunteer Placements" for July 2013
The Uniting Church in Australia has valued partnerships with over 30 overseas churches. One of the ways we express our longstanding friendship and shared mission is through the exchange of personnel of all ages, backgrounds and gifts. It’s all about sharing with one another, and learning along the journey. We like to call it reciprocal service.
Are you interested in serving alongside our partners in their own, unique settings? Are you ready to learn more about what it means to be a global church? Check out these new volunteer placements, each requested by our partners in response to their needs.
This year the Experience program will be moving into a system of intakes for volunteers, with placements in the following sectors –
- Theological education
- Pastoral care and Children's/Youth Ministry
- Health
- Education and Library
- Community development
- Administration, Communications and IT
- Trades
For a comprehensive list of specific placements for the July 2013 intake, visit the UnitingWorld website.

Findon.
A city church has a particular responsibility to connect with the CBD – workers, residents, students, and visitors. Uniting Communities is running two Community Development Workshops for congregations. Running concurrently, participants can choose to join Peter Kenyon who returns with an Introduction to Asset Based Community Development (also known as ABCD) or Richard Harmer who will facilitate Practical Tools for Connecting Communities.
There is no charge, and refreshments and lunch will be provided.
It would be great to have a group from Pilgrim involved to further our connection with the CBD.

HAWKE CENTRE: Not in my backyard:
- Community Announcement -
Community responses to higher density living – is it all in the mind?
Free public lecture with Australian social planner and ethicist Dr Wendy Sarkissian.
Wednesday 29 May, 5.30pm for 6.00pm start.?
Allan Scott Auditorium, UniSA City West campus, Hawke Building
Why is there such strong community resistance to proposals for higher density housing in Adelaide’s neighbourhoods? Aren’t people just being unreasonable and ignoring the need to make our cities more sustainable? Isn’t Adelaide’s 30-Year Plan what we must have to be sustainable – despite community resistance? Dr Sarkissian argues that two things need to change. We need housing that is more ‘home-like’. And we need engagement processes that reflect greater emotional intelligence than the processes we currently employ.
