Click! and it's too late. . .
You click the send button on the email and you wonder - should have I done that? Did I check that it made sense? Words escape your mouth and in moments you wonder if they will come back to bite you.

Events happen, and they have the potential to come back and revisit you. We let people down - and we dread the next meeting.

Personal history - we often wish we could press the button, the rewind/skip back button, erase our impulsive, impetuous words and actions.

Poor old Peter - that was something of his story, his history. He is a very ordinary chap in many ways, isn’t he? And after breakfast one day his history is revisited. Jesus turns to Simon Peter and says…. Well you know what he says. (John 21:15-25)

Peter is caught between histories - his personal history and the history of the trial, death, burial and resurrection of Jesus.

Histories, we all have them! Histories - the story of our lives. We have those actions where we wonder if we should have pressed the “send” button, time when we desire to skip back and erase, and undo in order to limit the pain for ourselves and others.

We have our personal histories which collide with Easter; histories of how we have served, and let down the risen Christ.

That is our history - like Peter. His history is remarkably like ours.

Our personal histories do not have to trip us up. Yes, there are consequences. Yes, like Peter there are difficult questions at times, but our call to love, and our call to follow, like Peter, remains unchanged, yet is “refreshed”. And when it all boils down to it - that is what fulfils us in the ordinary, in the everyday.

Personal history - yep we all have them. But it is because our history has collided with the Jesus history that resurrection means a new start, a new start to love and serve in this community.
