7:40pm Maundy Thursday
The Maundy Thursday vigil is based on the theme, Encounter with Principalities
and Powers. The vigil will take the form of a 45 minute walk around Victoria Square and pilgrims will be
invited to reflect on the city landscape which represents the principalities and powers of our day.
In the hours before Good Friday Jesus encountered those in authority and this walk invites people to
view the city from the Gethsemane garden, reflecting on those events which led Jesus to the cross.
The circuit walk of Victoria Square will take 45 minutes and begin at 7.40pm as we
gather on the footpath outside the front porch of Pilgrim Church. The walk
will visit six locations and reflect on the urban landscape which is symbolic of
principalities and powers of the 21st century. Through our imagination and prayer we will make
connections between the last hours of Jesus and the realties of social power. We will reflect
on the way individuals and the institutions of our society work for the common good but can also
become corrupted by self serving power.
At each station on the way we will describe the scene through the words of the Gospel of John,
reflect on the city and conclude with a prayer for ourselves and the world.
The walk will open our eyes and ears, keeping us awake to the city, its flows and sounds,
the movement of people and the pathways of human relationships which are shaped by principalities
and powers.
